Paris, France.
During the opening ceremony of the 3rd World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Paris recently--a session featuring top diplomats and dignitaries--only one actual death row inmate addressed the delegates from over 120 nations: Pennsylvania death row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Abu-Jamal delivered brief remarks recorded from his Pa death row cell that echoed criticisms of the death penalty contained in presentations during the opening session by top officials from France, Germany, Italy and the Council of Europe.
A sampling of comments from death penalty supporters and opponents sent to Gov. Ted Strickland since the Democrat's November election:
From capital punishment opponents:
"There are just too many questions about the death penalty to believe it is just or humane."
_Jan. 12 e-mail from Jennifer Stewart, of Stow in northeast Ohio.
"Please stop capital punishment by appointing a commission to review it and build public support for ending it altogether."
There was a news article today in the "Scottish News of the World" newspaper with the heading, "We'll kill Yanks if Kenny dies"
Threats have been sent to this newspaper claiming that, "If Richey is put to death, Americans will be killed in Scotland. Blood for Blood"
Phone calls have stated, according to the News of the World, "We won't tolerate the unlawful and unjust torture of any Scot. Richey has been held for 20 years under the sentence of death. Americans can no longer expect the generosity of our nation"
The threats were made by extremists claiming to represent the Scottish National Liberation Army, masterminded by ex-soldier Adam Busby, 57. In 2001 the group sent parcels of lethal anthrax to Government agencies. They where also behind a 2002 acid package attack on Cherrie Blair and have tried to poison water supplies in cities down south.
Manchester police are probing claims his group have put cancer causing chemicals into the city's water.
Got this message from Pete McKenna, Karen's dad:
So many Richey supporters have been kind enough to send Birthday Wishes to me. Their kindness is very much appreciated, and if there is any way of inserting a thank-you to all of them on the web-site I would be very gratefull. Thank You from pappa-pete.
Hi Everyone,
Below is a link to our newest motion for Patrick Swiney's case of actual innocence. It was filed in the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta, GA on February 6, 2007. We think it is a "Masterpiece" (and it's an easy read), and we look forward to seeing what this court's reaction is.
On St Valentine's Day my dad was born.
He has been my strength in this campaign ( and more) and always there for me. He has kissed things better, kicked my bum and just loved me throughout.
He has fought so hard for Kenny and continues to do so because he believes so much that this is an injustice.
I learned so much from him on this.
I could not ask for more in a father and I am so proud of my dad.
Happy Birthday Dad. I love you so very much. xx
