This thread discusses the Content article: Richey: "It's good to be home"

I have read many comments on Kenny's release and it is amazing the people who are full of shit! These people should be ignored with the contempt they deserve as the obviously know nothing about the case! Welcome home Kenny and keep your chin up! You have much to be proud of!

While it is a sad state of things, it is really not very surprising.

We are taught from the day we're five fingers tall that the courts and the police are the most upright, responsible and virtuous people you can find.

They're the final executors of society's power over individuals, as well as the guarantors of our safety and prosperity.

While we may understand intellectually that there is no guarantee that every policeman, prosecutor, attorney, judge and jury get it absolutely right every time, we generally tend to believe the system and its safeguards.

Therefore when the system get it REALLY wrong, we have a hard time believing this. We think that where it is smoke, there's gotta be a fire. If someone has been on death row for 21 years, he just CAN'T be totally innocent.

The effect is that the proof of innocence will have to get past all those preconceptions before we even are willing to give the man the benefit of doubt. Some of us are more cynical about the prowess of the system than others. But even those of us that have seen firsthand how bad it can be, still tend to start from the guilty until proven innocent. Actually we tend to be more biased and faster than the legal system to pronounce guilt, so stepping back, looking at the facts are even harder.

In reality I am not at all surprised of the vehemence of some people, if anything I am happy that so many are not. If anything, the sheer number of people that has come to the conclusion that he must be TOTALLY innocent is nothing but amazing.
Every time I get a reason to reevaluate some of my preconceptions, it makes me that much younger and more vital.

Hi,
Yes, Peter, I couldn't agree more. There's an astonishing amount of ignorance of basic facts and abuse in the comments I've read online. Even my Mum was a bit sceptical when I told her of Kenny's release and my support for him. That said, she did admit that she didn't know enough about it to have an opinion - if only everyone was as fair minded!
