This thread discusses the Content article: Strickland "spares" John
That's great news that OH aren't going to murder John later this month. I was trying to use that link on here yesterday to contact the Gov. but it wouldn't let me use it as I wasn't from the US!
Karen ... do you know if he is able to appeal LWOP or has he run out of appeals?
thanks Joolz |
I dont know yet Joolz. We are waiting to hear from the attorneys on this.
I hope there is some form of appeal available.

Is there anything we can do on his behalf?

The short answer is no additional appeals -- he has exhausted his post-conviction remedies in the state and federal courts (that is why the original january execution date was considered a "real date").
Keep in mind: he also had issues in Kentucky -- he was out on parole for a murder conviction that he actually committed when he got busted in Ohio on other charges, and then "admitted" to the murder of Mottinger. So even if he was freed on this charge, it could mean his return to Kentucky for parole violations.
Spirko's only means of release at this point are his attorneys unearthing compelling evidence of his innocence that would convince the governor to release him (either with a full pardon or commutation). Also considering that the governor is a political animal, unless they come up with a smoking gun that either completely exonerates Spirko, or clearly points the finger at someone else, I'd count on Spirko spending the rest of his life in prison. But it is a heck of a lot better than the state executing him. |
