I am longing to hear other people's views on this as it has been pretty quiet since the announcement.
Although against the death penalty, do others not think that Saddam deserves all he gets? So many people murdered and tortured under his regime.
I know it may seem two faced with being against the death penalty, but I feel there could be no other alternative for this man. |
I think it would cause trouble no matter what he got - kill him, he's a martyr and let him live and rot in a cell, he's a a rallying point for his supporters. Not easy, I am (trying to be) a Christian, but I wouldn't shed tears if they did hang him, I'm afraid!

I think it will cause trouble either way. However, I am anti death penalty as punishment for anyone, including Saddam.
If he is executed he will be made a martyr. And we dont want that !!
There is also the small matter of politics playing a huge part in this. People are not blind or stupid and this verdict came out I believe in the attempt to help certain political careers in elections. I believe people saw through this.
I abhor the death penalty and all it stands for. That is not justice. Justice would be for Saddam to live in prison the rest of his life. Killing him or anyone is just not an option I dont believe.
I have watched how silent people have been on various groups about this and the fact is that if you are pro life and anti Death penalty then its clear cut. You oppose his execution as you would with any other.

Although, if he is put to death, then at least he can no longer give orders from his prison cell to his dedicated followers.

Very true. In this case, he has to die. Even if he was given LWOP, his followers would still obey his every word and millions more innocents could die. I see the point that we are anti Death Penalty, but I cannot see any other alternative for Saddam

there are ways to stop him getting word out to his supporters. They did it with Timothy McVeigh. They did not allow him contact with the media.
They could do that with Saddam and if he had anyone else do it, it would draw negative attention and punishment to Saddam by the authorities.
