Ohio prisoner released pending new trial after 20 years on death row
A man who spent 20 years on Ohio's death row has been released pending a
new trial.
Joe D'Ambrosio, 48, declined to comment as he walked out of the Cuyahoga
County jail in Cleveland yesterday.
D'Ambrosio was convicted of murdering 19-year-old Tony Klann in 1988 and
dumping his body in a creek. But in 2006, a federal judge ruled that
prosecutors withheld from D'Ambrosio and his attorneys 10 key pieces of
evidence that might have exonerated him. A new trial is scheduled to start
May 4.
Last week, a judge set bond at 10 % of $50,000 and agreed to allow
D'Ambrosio to live with a Cleveland-area woman who befriended him while he
was in prison.
