Man who was wrongly imprisoned for decades dies

Tuesday, 20 March 2007

"One thing I learned, everything counts in life." ~Timothy Howard

Timothy Howard, an innocent man, a victim of misguided justice, is dead tonight. There wasn't anything fair about "the gap" in his life; nothing restorative about his years in prison, and certainly nothing reassuring to any of us about what those years did to his spirit. If the system incarcerates an innocent man and then so destroys him that he cannot get his life back, it most definately cannot be a rehabilitative place for anyone; and thus we are all placed at greater risk.

I do not know how to contact the family directly, but if Grant Medical is like most hospitals, you can still get a last minute card to the family using the hospital's online service at http://www.ohiohealth.com/body.cfm?id=433

they usually will forward all mail to the family. Send to the Timothy Howard Family, Room 333, cardiac intensive-care unit, Grant Medical Center. Remember, your message has to be under 200 words.

Timothy Howard is dead.

The 53-year-old Columbus man who spent nearly half his life imprisoned for crimes he didn't commit died just before 2 p.m. today at Grant Medical Center shortly after his family withdrew life support.

Howard suffered a massive heart attack on Friday, had irreversible brain damage, and never regained consciousness.

James Owen, one of Howard's attorneys, who was at his bedside, said about 60 to 70 members of Howard's family and friends were allowed to see him briefly prior to the life support withdrawal.

One of those who paid his respects was Gary James, Howard's childhood friend from the East Side.

Howard and James were convicted for a Dec. 21, 1976, bank robbery and murder of guard Berne Davis.

In 2003, the two men were freed after new evidence and information withheld at the 1977 trial showed they had been wrongfully convicted.

Howard received a $2.5 million settlement from the state last year, the largest in Ohio history to a former inmate.
