Does my state have the death penalty?
Yes, Ohio has executed a total of 12 people since 1976. (this figure has now changed)

What is my governor's position on the death penalty?
Gov. Bob Taft (R) supports the death penalty. As of January 2003, he had no intention of issuing a moratorium on the death penalty. According to his press secretary, Governor Taft reviews every case very carefully just to be sure justice is done. Also, governors in Ohio do not have the power to issue a moratorium.

How many people are on Death Row in my state?
There are currently 196 prisoners on Death Row in Ohio. Of the 196 Death Row prisoners, 100 are black, 90 are white, 2 are Latino, 2 are Native American and 2 are Asian.

Is there anything like the Center on Wrongful Convictions in my state?

Was anyone on Death Row ever found innocent in my state?
Two innocent people were exonerated on Death Row in Ohio. Gary Beeman was released in 1979 after serving three years and Dale Johnson was released after serving six years.

Are there any opportunities for volunteering in my state?
Ohioans to Stop Executions OTSE meets bi-monthly and when an execution is pending. OTSE is always welcoming new members, who come from a variety of backgrounds, and participate in a variety of different ways. Priests, scholars, lawyers, private citizens -- from organizing vigils, lectures, training, making financial contributions, contributing to the newsletter or web site - there is much work to be done! OTSE members across the state are currently working on collecting local government endorsements of a moratorium on executions. Cincinnati was the first major Ohio city to pass such a resolution in December 2001.
