February 1995 - Death row moves to the Mansfield Correctional Institution from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville after the 1993 riots there.

 

Sept. 5, 1997 - A riot breaks out in cellblock 4 when death row inmates overpower a guard and go on a rampage, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage and beating inmate Wilford Berry with pipes and padlocks. Berry was dubbed "The Volunteer" because he actively sought execution. Other inmates feared it would have a domino effect.

Feb. 19, 1999 - Berry becomes the first person executed in Ohio since 1963.

 November 2001 - The state votes to dump the electric chair as a form of execution and use only lethal injection.

 August 2003 - Three MANCI guards are found innocent in U.S. District Court of using excessive force to quell the 1997 death row riot.

 Feb. 3, 2005 - Condemned killers Maxwell White and Richard Cooey make a failed escape attempt.

March 2005 - An administrative investigation finds staff complacency and lack of supervision allowed the escape attempt. Eleven employees eventually are disciplined.

 March 22, 2005 - The state announces death row will be moved from MANCI to a supermaximum facility in suburban Youngstown, affecting 198 inmates.
