Support needed. 87 Miles of Pain

Sunday, 27 August 2006

Alan Fisher is a TV journalist  who has been a long time supporter and friend of mine and Kenny's. Alan has shown tremendous support for Kenny's campaign and has been a wonderful Ally to us both.

Now Alan needs some support for a very worthy cause. I wil let him explain what he is doing and I urge people to support this in some way.

On September 24th - for the third year in a row - I'm taking part in the Oxford to Cambridge Bike Ride to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Heart disease is still Britain's biggest killer - but my reason for taking part is a little bit more personal.

Three years ago, my son Scott was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. It's called aortic valve stenosis. Essentially it means the valve which pumps blood away from the heart is slightly too thick and at some point in his life Scott will need open heart surgery. It's a degenerative disease rather than a debilitating one, which means Scott runs around like any normal seven year old and suffers no real adverse effects at this stage. It is though, surprisingly common with almost one in a hundred children affected.

Scott is one of the lucky ones. We know about his condition and with the doctors help it can be monitored.

More research is needed into this and other cases which is why I push myself though 87 miles of pain, linking two of the cities housing Britain's most prestigious seats of learning. It is a very hilly route.

So this is where you come in! I'm looking for people to sponsor me for the ride. Any donation is gratefully received.

You can do this two ways. If you're in London you can give me cash or a cheque (made payable to the BHF) or you can go to  www.bhf.org.uk/sponsor/Alanfisher

and donate on line.

Over the past two years I've raised just almost nine thousand pounds. With your help I'm hoping to bust the £10,000 mark this year.

I appreciate you reading this far and hope you'll support me.

Best Wishes

Alan
