Just a wee update from us

Tuesday, 27 September 2005

Sorry I havent been around for a wee while. Have had phone issues AGAIN!!!!!!!!! But it is sorted out once more.

I was also away to London at the Amnesty International Media Awards. I was happy to see a fellow Scot Billy Briggs from The Herald win an award there for highlighting human rights issues. WELL DONE BILLY!!

I met so many lovely, interesting people and have come back all refreshed and fired up once more.

Kenny is doing pretty good and we have spoken for hours and had a lot of fun, which was very nice. He was pleased to hear all the London news and what is happening.

I have had so many emails from supporters asking me what is going to happen and how Kenny will cope when he is released and if he will have help and support.

Hopefully we will hear very soon from the US Supreme Court on what is happening. Then Kenny will hopefully go to County Jail. Then I will probably go over to visit him and do some campaign work too.

If there is a trial this year, then I will be there at that obviously, with media no doubt. Who knows what will happen with a trial if there is one. But these people could make him wait and wait, which we fully expect.

Then it should be FREEDOM day and I go to the prison and get him to bring him home to Scotland with our media people. We wont get time to think, I am sure when this all kicks off. So much is planned for this time, that I am glad I am not the one making the arrangements:)  We will just follow on and do as we are told and enjoy it lots. And it should also be fun too. Everyone wants to make sure he has a nice time as well as doing what needs to be done.

I don't think we will be in US long after his release. We have too much to do and anyway UK is where people want to see him and I for interviews and talks etc. This could take a few months to die down some I am sure. At the very least so I am told.

Kenny will have so much to adjust to after his ordeal and it will be very difficult for him to do so, but he has all the help he needs to do so back here as everyone who knows us knows.

It will not be easy, we have spoken about this and I have done a lot of research into it and also spoken to many people who have been released after being in prison for a long time for crimes they did not commit. Kenny will have the chance to speak to all these people who will be so helpful to him at this difficult time. ONLY they will know how he really feels because they have experienced it. And Kenny needs to know he is not alone in this. Which he isn't. He wont ever be.

Freedom will bring its own share of problems. But at least we are aware of this and know the help is there to deal with it. We know it wont be easy for him to be around people and to be free. This is something we have discussed extensivley.

The anger at the injustice and time lost is the worst thing. It can be overwhelming for a prisoner freed from the hell they lived in for so long. Each day is a struggle to get through. Suddenly there you are out in the big world, with choices to make even over simple things and it his difficult for people who don't know what it is like to have even the most basic of choices taken from them. While in prison everything is to do with rules and security. You eat when you are told, sleep when you are told, dont have a handle on your cell door and its locked either electronically or by a key from the outside. To live daily in a small space, and not be able to do the simplest of things to then suddenly be able to do what you like is a scary thing. Something that most people cannot comprehend.

Even a trip to the shops for something as simple as shampoo or toothpaste is an ordeal. Why? because in prison there may be 2 or 3 brands and thats it. Walk into any supermarket and go to the shampoo section and see how many brands are there to choose from and you can bet there isnt the one you had, the one you liked and knew to be bought. This can cause huge distress and panic.

Kenny being the "difficult" buggar he is at the best of times and a handful will be even more of a handful I am sure. But he will have REAL support which he so desperatley needs. Without this support he would not be able to cope with "normal" life............so it is vital he gets it and is allowed to adjust to life gradually. With no added pressures put upon him. Which is what I am trying to make sure doesn't happen. He will be under enough pressure just by being freed and meeting all these people.

It will be like learning to live all over again. Basically like a toddler being shown new things, only you arent a toddler, you are a grown man, who feels helpless because everything has changed so much in all the years you have been locked up. That brings anger because you feel you should be able to cope with it all. It all becomes a vicious circle if not handled properly. So it is VITAL it is handled properly.

Imagine what it is like to see how prices have changed so much. To see how technology has changed too.All the gadgets that once upon a time seemed like Space Age stuff.

When Kenny went into prison, Space Invaders was the big thing in computer games. We have spoken of this and my son was playing his play station game of James Bond one day and Kenny asked what the noise was. When he heard how realistic it was he was amazed. I explained to him it is all like Virtual Reality now and when you play the game YOU are James Bond.  He has decided he is getting ALL these games, though it will be funny to see how he works the controls :) Though no doubt he will pick it up easy enough because he is such a big kid.

Life will be interesting to say the least!!:)

So thats the update for now. When I hear anything definite I will let you know.

Love Karen and Kenny xx
