A leading human rights campaigner, whose story was told in the film Dead Man Walking , has called for Death Row Scot Kenny Richey to be freed. Sister Helen Prejean says Richey was not properly defended at his trial. Richey was convicted of a murder he claims he did not commit and has been on death row in Ohio since.

Sister Helen Prejean was played by Susan Sarandon in the film Dead man Walking. But she says there is little Hollywood glamour in Kenny Richey's case.

Originally from Edinburgh, Kenny Richey was convicted in 1987 of starting a fire which killed two year-old Cynthia Collins. He denied the crime and has been on Death Row since. Last year an appeal court set aside his conviction. But in November, the US Supreme Court overturned that decision.

Kenny Richey is appealling again. The process could result in another two years on Death Row, and if unsuccessful his options are running out.
