Keenya sought a second opinion regarding the medical treatments being given to her two grandchildren. That is how she came to Dr Minor who was a supposed expert on ADD/ADHD in children and who was an apparently a life-long sufferer himself of this condition. In fact, when he met Keenya, he told her he was certain she, too, had ADD/ADHD and promply presecribed Ritlan for her, as well as, for the two grandchildren then 3 and 6 years old. Keenya eventually stopped taking the Ritlan after complaining to Dr Minor of the drugs adverse effects on her.
Following Keenya's incarceration, she attempted to obtain her medical records from Dr. Minor who refused to respond. In the course of exploring her options, we discovered the Ohio Medical Board had entered into a Consent Agreement with Dr. Minor; one of the issues at hand was his refusal to give medical records to former clients. His continued refusal to do so was one of the reasons the Medical Board eventually revoked his license.
Sometime after Keenya's incarceration in August 1998, Dr. Minor left Akron, Ohio and, at the time of the Consent Agreement, was working at the Indian Hospital, Lawton, Oklahoma. It would be very interesting to know why Dr. Minor left Ohio? At the time the Ohio Medical Board took their formal action to revoke his license, Dr. Minor apparently quit his post at Indian Hospital for 'whereabouts unknown'.
In Keenya's criminal case, the Summit County Prosecutor cited Dr Minor as the originator of a complaint to CSB against Keenya; which led to CSB removal of the grandchildren, the Juvenile Court cases, and the eventual criminal case.
Dr Minor was cited prominently in the criminal case including his purported statement of horrible treatment, in his office, by Keenya of her two grandchildren. This is the same Dr Minor who, in the underlying Juvenile cases, when interviewed by a CSB casework stated that he had over-medicated the children to protect them from themselves (their erractic and destructive behavior). Subsequently in the criminal case, Dr Minor is cited as stating he was so horrified at the abuse by Keenya of her two grandchildren that he over-medicated them to protect them from such 'horrors' (the implication being that if the children were drugged up sufficiently they would not be as affected by Keenya's abuse of them!).
The Prosecutor quoted Dr Minor as stating, 'She [Curry] also asked Dr. Minor to give the children drugs to "knock them out." When Dr. Minor expressed concern, she told him "don't you dare tell anyone I can't care for these kids. I need the Social Security money...that Keenya Curry frightens him. He further stated that he often "wakes up in a cold sweat thinking about the raw fear in the childen's eyes.' Of course, it then became the Judge's contention that Keenya had over-medicated her grandchldren.
I believe that if one reads about Dr Minor's own medical history (in the Ohio Medical Board's documents contained in their action to revoke his license), one will might well believe Dr Minor had a history of erractic mental issues wherein he likely woke up 'in a cold sweat' on many occassions. In fact, his behavior seems to be at the root cause of losing his license?
The Prosecutor also quotes a witness who took the little boy on outings as stating '[she] felt the drugs made him drowsy and sluggish.' No doubt since we're talking about a then 3 year-old being over-medicated with Ritalin!
Of course, all we are left with is the Prosecutor's version of events and of what supposed witnesses actually said. The Prosecutor maintained exclusive control of the children who were examined only by the State's doctors; no independent evaluation was ever requested or conducted or the supposed witnesses interrogated.
NOTE: Their have been many studies by reputable physicians concerning the abusive prescrition of Ritalin to children and the terrible effects on them.
