Keenya awards-certificates

I asked Keenya to send copies to me of any awards she has received while in prison. I received those and I was totally blown away! I knew that she has been trying to keep busy but I simply had no idea all that she has been up to. I'm so impressed!!
Not only has she been enriching her own life but, she has also been dedicated to enriching the lives of others as demonstrated by her tutoring awards.
Not many know that she is prevented from taking advantage or certain educational opportunites and is even prevented from taking some jobs - all because of the length of her sentence. It makes all the more amazing what she has been able to accomplish.
These award, certificates, and recognitions attest only some of the things which have occupied her during her nearly 9 yrs in prison. Not noted, are the many items she has crocheted as gifts for family and friends, under went a knee replacement, fought nearly 1-1/2 years to simply get a pair of shoes (finally got them because of intervention of friends yet they don't fit!), fight continually to get a minimal of medical care, the loss of our mother, the loss of affections of her children and grandchildren, lost all her possessions (everything!): house, personal belongings, car, etc. How many of us would hold up so well under such circumstances, let alone being imprisoned 9 years while facing 16 more behind bars because of being railroaded.
Keenya is a person with a heart of gold; a strong person, a person who made mistakes like anyone else. I hope that she can remain strong though I know it has been excruitiatingly difficult, at times.
Please take some time to send Keenya a card and let her know that you are as impressed as I am with all that she has accomplished.
Thank you! - Del

WAYS IN WHICH YOU CAN SHOW SUPPORT FOR KEENYA
Cards and Letters: she gets such an emotional lift when people take the time to write her. And, she always wants to respond but cannot always do so or not quickly. She gets a limited number of 'free' envelopes provided by the Prison but those are few. Otherwise, she has to rely on receiving postage-embossed envelopes from supporters. Also, for those of you overseas, do not feel that she does not appreciate your correspondence! - the problem is, the Prison apparently has no facility to add the extra postage to her letters which are addressed overseas; the way we get around that is, she will send those letters to me and I will mail them to you.
Envelopes: You can send her 3 envelopes at a time, enclosed in an envelope addressed to her. But!! the postage on those envelopes cannot be stamps - the postage must be the kind which are embossed on them by the Post Office. If you send any other type of envelopes or postage stamps the Prison will deem them 'contraband' and return them to sender.
Money-Order: used to be that only family members or those on her approved visitor's list were able to send funds (in the form of money orders). But the rules have changed so that anyone can now send her money.
If you are so inclined, I'm sure she would be overwhelmed and most appreciative of any amount you care to send her. But, be aware that each money order is limited to a maximum of $100.00.
If you do, make the money-order payable to her using the address above and don't put anything else in the envelope (no letter or note, nothing). I suggest you follow-up with a separate letter or card to let her know you sent a money-order because the money simply shows up in her Prison account and she won't know who it came from! (and thus, will not have the opportunity to thank you).
She earns $22.00/month for work that she does in Prison- she uses that to buy some postage and sundries. That's it...all other money, food boxes, clothing boxes, envelopes have to be donated to her (that means us: family and friends). I'm disgusted that the Prison charges her $3.00 every time she talks to a doctor or nurse. Her telephone calls are limited to 15 minutes each; when she calls me it costs me $21.00 per call (the cost varies depending upon where the recipient lives).
