Erica Hurtt talks with John Spirko

WTVG-- July 31, 2006 - John Spirko is sitting on Ohio's death row for killing Elgin postal worker Betty Jane Mottinger 24 years ago. The post office was robbed and Mottinger was abudcted. Her body was found a month later in a field near Findlay.

Now, 24 years later, Spirko's still alive and holding out hope that he will not be executed. Defense attorneys say they have uncovered evidence that will clear Spirko, but a lead investigator says they got the right guy and he confessed to the crime.

13 abc's Erica Hurtt talked exclusively with death row inmate John Spirko. Governor Bob Taft has granted Spirko four execution reprieves in less than a year. The latest delay comes as the state has agreed to do DNA testing on crime scene evidence.

It's a case that has many people wondering. Tonight at six, we'll have an indepth look at the case against John Spirko and why there have been so many delays in his execution.
